This page is for those of you that have an alarm system that is more than a few years old. Many systems are still usable until they are 15 years old, but most are not. In the past Home Security was a rather stagnant industry in terms of innovation of new product. But, in the last few years that have been major change for the good.
Alarm Systems today can communicate with you via text messaging and even send video clips. Additionally, you can use cellular device for monitoring instead of a landline. You can even tun on and off your air conditioner and lights in your home from any computer or cell phone. You can even turn on and off your alarm system with your cell phone.
Older alarm systems pretty much just detected whether it thought a door or window was opened or a motion detected any type of motion. An old fashioned signal was sent to the central monitoring station and an operator called you and told you that they received a signal from whatever device but had no idea what was going on beyond that. Not anymore.
With today's alarm systems the central monitoring station can listen in with two-way voice to see if they can hear a burglary in progress. If you add security cameras you can actually see if anyone is in the home. And, you can get video clips sent straight to you cell phone anytime there is motion detected by a security camera so you can look for yourself. There is a laundry list of interactive features that you can take advantage of from any computer and your cell phone.
Newer alarm system features:
cellular alarm monitoring
text messaging anytime the system is armed, disarmed or triggered
videos sent to your phone any time there is motion detected so you can see what is going on
two-way voice so the central station can hear if anything is going on
use your phone to turn on and off your system
turn on and off your lights, air conditioner or heat from any computer or cell phone
take a peek in at the nanny or house cleaner
log in to the system to check for alarm activity
You may not need all the new features available for alarm systems but some of them may be great for you. But, you cannot typically use an alarm system from just a few years ago because they are not compatible with new monitoring techniques and integrated features.
